#1180 - 1963 Ringling Bros and Barnum Bailey Circus Program

But, sadly, the ultra-PC world has destroyed the classic circus experience for kids now. (sign)... There is a story by famous author John Steinbeck in this program that recounts the utter thrill of whole communities when circus came to town; it stimulated imagination and assured people of a more primal past before society was tamed, dull, controlled & boring! (double sign)... This program is 39 pages of fun pictures, text, and product ads! Do you want "Stripe" toothpaste again? A 63 Valiant maybe? Fun to read and reminisce about a simpler sane world... In great condition!

This is a 1/9-th glass plate sized ambrotype of a civilian gentleman with a rather big head. From the Civil War period. He wears a patterned-tie and frock coat. The arm of the photographer's chair is draped in a textile. This was developed on what was called "ruby" or "Bohemian" type colored-glass for it's red or maroon color. The depth of color gives the background contrast needed to show an ambrotype (independent of another black background when using simple clear glass plates). There are some emulsion scrapes around the background (periphery) of the image where the brass mat preserver contacted it. There is some solarization (iridescent ring) to emulsion around periphery. The sitter is unaffected by that. Contrast & clarity are very good. Comes with a CW brass mat but no glass or case. Sitter is unknown.

#724 - Spooky Ambrotype ? Mourning the Dead???
This is a very cool yet a bit spooky 1/4-Plate Ambrotype of a Civil War era woman in Mourning Garb. Her look seems hollow. Who died~ a child in a crib or her husband in a trench? It comes with original glass and brass mats but no case. The black contrast paint is only behind her image, giving more of a 3D effect to space behind her. No ID known. A sight likely seen commonly on both Northern & Southern streets alike.
Condition: fine+  |  Price: 65

#779 - Creepy Mr. Young with Drawings & Inscriptions
This is a cool 1/6-plate tintype of a somewhat scary looking gentleman from late 1850's to early 1860's. There are very light cleaning scuff lines across face and background. But overall focus and contrast are great. Even better is BEHIND the image! On the paper of the leatherette half case is writing and even a drawing of a person done in pencil! "Given to me by Mr. Davis July 10, 1869. (In French) Je l'aime tres beaucoup. Bless his soul." Then drawing of person. "May she kick you to thunder is my wish." (What an odd expression!) On the rear lip of the brass mat is scratched-in a name. I think it is "Mr. And. Young". Overall a super "time capsule" behind this man's old image
Condition: good  |  Price: 65

#777 - Two Girls Tintype in Summer 1859
This is a 1/6-th Plate Tintype of Two sisters who pose in similar dresses while clasping hands. They each wear large broaches which are slightly different. Behind the tintype is written "Taken Summer of 1859 ... one in curls 17 yrs old." Too bad the sitter did not write down any names! The image has great contrast & clarity. (At first I thought it was an ambrotype) There is a faint copyright notation for the tintype blank along one edge. Comes with original glass, brass mats and a full leatherette case. This image has a LOT of delicate poignancy. These gals obviously had beloved relatives and dear friends from childhood who would soon march off to war.
Condition: fine+  |  Price: 67

#726 - Desolate Spouse Ambrotype

#754 - Ambrotype of Woman with her Baby
This is a very lovely 1/6-th glass plate Ambrotype of a mother with her young infant. The contrast & clarity are just great and amazingly, baby stayed still! The woman seems to have a deeper complexion and features of a woman of light color. However she is not the maid for her clothing is neat with some good jewelry worn. The brass mat has notations imprinted upon it "Ambrotype by ENNECHT" and "Patented July 4 & 11 1854." But these mats could well have been used for many years after the patent date. And the clothing suggests the 1860's. There is a good chance Daddy was away at war. This fine image comes with original brass mats and a full leatherette case. The front glass is still tightly sealed to the rear ambrotype plate and I would leave it alone as such. The tape on spine of case is new. Otherwise, a great old original. No scratches or foxing spots.

#530 - Erotic Redhead by Bauer
This is a pencil-signed etching by Bauer which shows a woman with a fiery tuft of red hair reclining with her ample breasts falling out of her nightgown. A bit of a sassy image for the Thirties. It could be German, as the Germans in the Thirties were a bit intense. Image is 11" x 9". Annotated 92/150. It has no mat or frame. Interesting: old margin notes to framer to make mat the color of "feathers" (hair)

In the image with the large cameo brooch her eyes, lips, and jewelry are also hand-colored. In one image she wears fingerless "netted" gloves while in the other she sports her rings. It is possible she changed clothes for one visit to the photography studio because the thin black neck string in one picture seems present again, but turned to reveal a metal brooch on it. Each of these come with original glass, mats and a leatherette half case. Sadly, there was no sitter's ID with either image. Both are sold together of one price and one shipping fee.
