#689 - VALA MORO the artist & dancer
|
In our research in Europe, we have had very little luck in discovering much about the life of artist Vala Moro. What I learned while preparing my "Boudoir Art" book was that she was an artist in Vienna (Austria) during the Art Deco period of the Twenties & moreso Thirties. But all other details eluded us. However, I was grateful to receive information from a collector that Vala Moro was also a dancer. In fact, she also had her own tobacco or arcade card with her picture upon it. She was a stunning beauty shown in a progressive theatric Deco posed scene! If anyone else knows anything about Vala Moro's life, kindly Email me. Thanks!

#528 - Unmasked by Carle-DuPont
|
This is a pencil-signed drypoint etching by Carle-DuPont. It shows a blonde in a ballroom gown looking to the side coyly once her mask is off. Image is 16 1/2 by 12 1/2. Sheet is rectangular. This has nice colors and look, but unfortunately, the printing strike was so hard that the paper tore along the top of the oval impression line. Therefore, the paper is torn around the top rim of the picture (about 1/8 inch from image). A piece of archival tape stabilizes it at rear. In a frame, one would probably not notice this. There are a couple edge tears to sheet as well that do not reach the image. Thus, the price is set low to get it cheap for your wall. No mats or frame. Etching only
Condition: Good with tears | Price: 37.5

#529 - Pouchoir by Francis Cugat
|
This is very interesting indeed. What looks like a sectional overlay of colors used to build an image, much in the way the French such as Barbier used sectional printing in pouchoir. This colorful work shows a woman holdin up a candle for a suave dandy, all superimosed on a background image of her lower face in blue. There is a logo signature in a box: Francis Cugat. Interestingly, there was a Hollywood Set Designer by that name in the Forties. 10" by 8" with no margin an a pice of illustration cardboard. There is a slight bend in cardboard that caused a minimal cracking of ink of blue background above woman. It could be easily hand-touched in if one wished.

#539 - Confederate Wood Drive-In Cannonball Fuze
|
The Confederates often used these custom tapered fuze holders of wood rather than machine tooled brass, bronze or zinc used by the more industrialized north. Pounded down snuggly into the opening of a hollow shell with a mallet, the proper time fuze then was placed down the center shaft to set the burn-time. Made of wood. Hard to find as wood rotted away for shell preserved in the ground. So the surving examples had to be from saved surplus stock, which the CSA did not have in great excess by war's end. A more rare item!
Condition: Very Fine+ | Price: 97.5

#298 - Progressive Art Nouveau Period German Table Lamp
|
This is a fabulous example of German stylized metalwork in the 1900-1915 period. The futuristic dome looks like something out of a 50's SciFi movie! With chunk stained galss jewels that shine out in wild stippled rays in dim room. The base is pure Nouveau fun! Almost puts Sixties acid imagery to shame for its time! As a whole, this is a stunning, forward-thinking piece from a time when cars had barely been invented. Too bad they dropped the ball in their
adventursomeness!

#299 - DOUBLE HANDLED NEWCOMB COLEGE VASE
|
A stunning example of the prized early, high-glazed pieces done at Newcomb College in New Orleans from roughly 1900-1910. Turned by potter Joseph Meyer(JM). Each of these was then overpainted by individual student-artists of this progressive female school. In this case, Harriet Joor (HJ). Also, has impressed marks in base for Newcomb College (NC), the
clay base (buff), and the item's individual production number! You can really trace these back that accurately! The double handle is rare for Newcomb. The shape, colors, and condition are superb. A true museum piece! And people used to put flowers in these !!!!
